Dandelion Facts

1.-Dandelion is a flowering plant that belongs to the family Asteraceae.
2.-Dandelion inhabits different habitats that provide enough sunlight: meadows, grasslands, edges of the forests, gardens and lawns.
3.-Despite its bad reputation, dandelion has numerous properties that are beneficial for humans. It can be used as food, as an ingredient of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, in the production of tires, or as medicine.

4.-The name dandelion originates from the French words "dent de lion" which mean lion's tooth. This name is given because of the toothed leaves of dandelion.
5.-Dandelion is rich source of vitamins A, C and K. It also contains high level of iron, calcium and potassium. Dandelion is used mainly in Asian cuisine, often as an ingredient of salads and sandwiches.
6.-Dandelion can be used in the production of wine and root beer. Root of dandelion can be used as a substitute for coffee.
7.-Dandelion is used in folk medicine to treat infections and liver disorders. Tea made of dandelion act as diuretic (facilitates excretion of urine).

8.-The milky liquid produced in the stem contains latex (substance that is similar to rubber). Scientists created new species of dandelion which produces high quality latex in greater amount. This type of latex has potential to replace rubber in the production of tires in the near future.
9.-Some people may develop allergic reaction (contact dermatitis) after touching or consuming dandelion.
10.-Dandelion seeds are often transported away by a gust of wind and they travel like tiny parachutes. Seeds can travel 8 kilometers (5 miles) before it finally reaches the ground.

THE PLANT A plant is a living organism. It is made up of different parts, each or which has a particular purpose, or specialized function. Many plants grow out of seeds and bulbs. Seeds grow roots and shoots. Roots and shoots then grow leaves above ground. Many plants make flowers, which turn into fruits. Flowers and fruits make their own seeds. We call this a life cycle. Germination When a seed falls on the ground, it needs warmth and water in order to germinate; some seeds also need light. Dicots have seed coats that soften with moisture. After being planted in the soil for a few days, the seed absorbs water and swells until the seed coat splits. Monocots have harder seed coats that do not split, but stay in one piece. The stem, called the hypocotyl, pushes through the soil along with the cotyledons, or seed leaves; this is called germination, or sprouting. The tiny root pushes down and grows, looking for water and nutrients. Soon the cotyledons fall off and the first true leaves emerge. 3. IMPERSONAL PASSIVE SENTENCES

If the predicate of the passive sentence is a verb transitive like: believe, think, find, say, report, consider, understand, acknowledge, expect, tell, know then you can change the active sentence into passive using two ways. Look at the examples: a) People say that he is handsome. (in the present) * It is said that he is handsome. * He is said to be handsome. (to + V1) b) They knew he had an idea. * It was known that he had an idea. * He was known to have had an idea. (to + have V3) These are formal structures.
